Application

This procedure applies to all employees, students, volunteers, guests, contractors, and visitors within the Colorado Community College System, including its Colleges (CCCS or System).

Basis

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure a safe and secure environment in which students and employees can achieve their educational and career goals. CCCS prohibits possession of any weapons, including firearms, on any System or College owned or leased properties, or while participating in System or College programs and activities, except as outlined in this procedure.

Procedure

Authorized Weapons:
The only individuals that are authorized to carry weapons or firearms are:

  • Persons presenting an authorized public demonstration or exhibition pursuant to instruction in connection with an organized program or course of instruction.
  • Persons using a weapon or firearm in an approved educational program, such as a course designed for the repair or maintenance of weapons.
  • Persons participating in an authorized extracurricular activity or on an athletic team that requires use of a weapon or firearm.
  • Persons carrying a firearm in a parking area only, with a valid concealed carry permit. (Note: All storage of firearms in vehicles must comply with applicable laws.)
  • Persons retained by CCCS as security personnel if the weapon or firearm is being carried while engaged in their official duties as security personnel.
  • Certified Peace Officers.
  • Persons granted permission at the discretion of the Chancellor or College President for specific purposes.
  • Persons carrying a weapon or firearm as otherwise authorized by law.

Any concerns about possession of an unauthorized weapon or firearm should be reported immediately to College or System security/police, the College designee, or local police.

College Procedures:
College Presidents are responsible for developing rules pertaining to the authorized use of weapons and firearms as part of an approved program of instruction or extracurricular activity. Additionally, Presidents are responsible for developing rules pertaining to possession and storage of weapons and firearms in the residence halls and living facilities at their institutions.

Revising this Procedure

CCCS reserves the right to change any provision or requirement of this procedure at any time and the change shall become effective immediately.
